BuildZone UK

PJH Architectural Services was chosen by Buildzone UK to collaborate on an education new build project in Ellesmere, Shropshire. Our prior successful partnerships with BuildZone have fostered a strong working relationship. We enthusiastically offered our architectural expertise to this venture and looked forward to working closely with Northwest Academies Trust (NWA), BuildZone’s client, on the construction of the new school block.

The brief

The end user’s (NWA) brief involved the creation of a new school block, separate from the existing school buildings, with a modern external design that harmonized with the existing architectural theme. Internally, the goal was to establish a functional layout comprising three new classrooms, complete with appropriate WC facilities and storage space for each. PJH was chosen to provide comprehensive architectural services covering RIBA stages 0 to 4 (concept & sketch proposals, planning & detailed technical drawings).

Our engagement began with the initial concept and site feasibility phase, where we collaborated closely with both the client, Buildzone, and the end user, NWA, during RIBA stages 0 to 2. Our aim was to develop a design that met the requirements and preferences of all stakeholders. Upon reaching a consensus on the design (see below), we proceeded to work closely with a planning consultant and local authorities to create a detailed set planning drawings and information as part of RIBA Stage 3. These drawings were instrumental in obtaining a speedy and favorable planning decision.

Following the approval, our focus advanced to the production of detailed construction drawings in RIBA Stage 4. This phase involved close collaboration with structural engineers and M&E consultants to ensure that the design was not only aesthetically pleasing but also structurally sound and functionally efficient. We met strict timescale with this project in order for construction to start outside of term times (summer holidays). To save time, our accurate & concise drawings provided enough information for sub-contractors to accurately price and work from our drawings packing, which minimised timescales.

The design

Working closely with both BuildZone and NWA a number of internal & external options were considered. Collectively we came on the decision for 2 separate class rooms, one classroom incorporating a single class and another larger open plan classroom which provided the flexibility to combine two separate year groups. This modern learning style encourages collaboration and peer learning, studies have shown that.

Interaction between students of different ages promotes idea sharing and community building, with older students often serving as mentors. This not only aids in academic growth but also enhances communication and leadership skills.

Externally, we opted for a shallow gable roof style to match the existing blocks, but with a modern twist. By introducing overhanging canopies, we provided a contemporary architectural element, contributing to a more striking and dynamic exterior and enhancing the school’s overall appearance. Functionally, the overhanging canopies provide versatile outdoor spaces that benefit the students. These shaded areas serve as sheltered play areas, allowing children to engage in outdoor activities regardless of the weather. They also offer flexibility, accommodating various uses like outdoor classrooms and event spaces, enhancing the school’s functionality.

Moreover, when integrated with landscaping, these canopies create a harmonious connection between the built environment and nature, further enhancing the aesthetics of the play areas.

Another design feature we felt was important, was the full height glass doors and windows on each elevation. The numerous glass features within the classrooms, offer multiple benefits. Importantly, they flood the space with natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting and improving mood and concentration. The transparency connects students to nature, reduces feelings of confinement, and enhances the visual appeal of the room. Glass doors also promote flexibility, allowing for indoor-outdoor learning and collaboration. Additionally, the outdoor views inspire creativity and provide health benefits. Furthermore, the added multi-elevational external access adds variety to the learning environment, stimulating interest and movement while accommodating different teaching methods and activities. All doors offer DDA compliant level access, to allow all students access into the classroom. Overall, these design elements create a modern, inviting, and adaptable learning environment that fosters well-being and productivity among students and teachers.

Building regulations/ tender

We produced a clear & concise detailed set of building regulation drawings which doubled up as construction drawings, which enables and smooth co-ordination and construction on. Additionally, capitalising on our well-established relationship with a certified building control inspector, we promptly integrated them into our project team. This inclusion ensured a swift commencement of on-site activities and the prompt completion of inspections at crucial intervals. This strong working relationship between all parties allowed us to overcome any unforeseen challenges during the build.
